The range stretches from eastern Germany along the northern border of the Czech Republic to south-western Poland. The highest peak of the range is Śnieżka in the Karkonosze mountains on the Czech Republic–Poland border, which is 1,602 metres (5,256 ft) in altitude.
On the origin of the name “Sudety” there is no unequivocal opinion among scientists, the majority opts for a Celtic its origin. The word “Sudeta” has a core “sud” meaning wild boar, and the suffix “-eta ‘meaning forest. The original meaning may, therefore, read as forest or forest boars feral pigs.
